Beacon (College)
In Season And Out Of Season
Our desire is to train our college students with and in the truth of God's holy Word so that in the test of time, trials, and pressures of life during and after college, they will be able to stand firm in the truth, not being swayed or lured away by the temptations of this world.
In short, we want our collegians to follow wholeheartedly after the Lord "in season and out of season."
"I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching" (2 Tim 4:1-2).
This year we are going to be preaching through the Gospel of Mark.
College is a busy time. College students are fellowship-hopping, hanging out with Christian friends, serving, doing ministry; the list goes on.
For freshmen, I think it is easy to get lost in the whirlwind of it all. It is just a fun and exciting time, being in college for the first time, being free. But it can also be a really selfish time. Everything is about you. What you want to major in. What you want to do with your life. What kind of schedule fits you best. When you want to wake up. Also, which fellowship group or church fits you? And you ask yourself: Who reached out to me more? What group do I feel comfortable in?
And for the upperclassmen, I know how easy it is to get wrapped up in two things: the future and ministry. What you are going to do for your career. What grad school you are going to.
And with ministry many of you are serving so much: Monday meetings, Tuesday small groups, Wednesday large groups, Thursday ministry events. Friday go home. Saturday relax. Sunday church and then repeat. Over and over.
Ministry can be draining. When Sunday rolls around, church and Beacon seem just like another obligation. But we do not want it to be that way.
So we’re preaching through the Gospel of Mark. Because in lives consumed with self, we need more Jesus. We need to be reminded of who Jesus is, or, if we don’t really know anything about him, we need to meet him.
Instead of being tempted to think only of ourselves, let’s come to Beacon to think of Christ. I hope we can. I hope every week you can come to Beacon and learn more about your Savior.
Instead of letting ministry bog us down let’s go to Beacon and let our sails be filled with the winds of Christ. Some of us are just rowing so hard in ministry and we forget Christ is with us. We’re not doing this on our own. We’re studying Mark because we want more of Jesus. Who he is, what he’s done, why he’s done it. We want you to have a fuller relationship with Jesus, a clearer picture of your Savior.
I hope many of you come to Beacon this year. Come join us every Sunday afternoon from 1:30-3:00 for worship, games, fellowship, and teaching. I hope we can learn more about Jesus together.
